Good day Folks, Thanks for all this work, Paul, and especially letting me know your flexibility. This is a good process. Here are a lot of notes. let’s talk after you get them. For your reference & if I didn't send it yet, here’s my rough work score. There are chords in it. Part 0 - Free: - get rid of all hints of rhythm: the quarter notes, the rhythms in bars 11-12, the moving tuba parts, etc. This is totally free time. Just large whole note chords throughout. (The tempo is an illusion, a trick because we cannot play together live.) - After you re-do this, please make us a mix with no melody + only chords the first time, and a soft ensemble melody soft in the mix the 2nd time. Part 1 - March: - go back to my arrangement for the 1st time through the melody. It will just be Solo Melody + Chord Pads (no rhythm) + Drums. Listen to this sample. - don’t use the notes A & Ab in bars 27&28. It’s a melodic thing, not part of the harmony. No Bblyd or Bb7 chords. The harmony should be very open. - Your arrangement will come in the 2nd time, as the repeat of the tune. - add a vamp of the intro before 2nd and 3rd iterations of the melody for solos. - Marco+Paul - it will be interesting to find a funky beat that works WITH the mehter drumming you sent me! - Instead of having your trumpets play the melody, have them play long note clusters. Ismail & I will play the melody. *The trick (for me) with this kind of arrangement is to not let it sound too much like a "70’s ‘hip’ sounding tv detective show soundtrack”* Part 2 - March & Part 3 - March: these work well. 3 notes. - Let’s do it faster. - we will have to clarify + work on the 1/4 tones in the melody. - Please make a mix with no melody, just groove. Part 4 - 3/4, 6/8 - Bar 126 should be a low brass ‘answer’ of the melody. Trumpets rest. - no Dominant7#9 chord in bar 134 &162. Open up 134 section for blowing. - a different ending. I can send you something. Not the #9 chord. and also - we will have to clarify + work on the 1/4 tones in the melody. - Please make a mix with no melody the 1st time through the song, just groove. add your melody 2nd time. Note - I’m thinking of switching the order so that it goes 0-1-4-2-3. Thoughts? Let me know if this all makes sense to you. Thanks. Yours Frank
